Faura: Fund for the Exploitation and Rational Use of Water

This project is an action model developed by the Foundation for creating infrastructure for  better exploitation and rational use of water that supports the sustainable development of agricultural activities.

Under an action model coordinated by Foundation-Development Centers, the Faura project was performed during 2008 in the states of Sonora and Nayarit.

This iniciative began in Sonora in the year 2004, when the Central de Desarrollo del Valle de Yaqui, A.C.  (DERVY) discovered the mountain zone as an area of opportunity for stimulating the livestock activity among poor producers, whose main economic activity is the production of calves , even though it’s not a very profitable activity due to the bad management of the herd and the low availability of water for forage production.

The program focuses on optimizing water resources and increasing the forage production for feeding the livestock, as well as on spreading the program’s coverage to the Yaqui Valley in order to include groups that produce cereals such as wheat and corn.

Following DERVY’s example, the Central de Desarrollo Rural de Nayarit, A.C. (DERNAY) in 2008 began the production of the Faura Project in the irrigation units of Santiago Ixcuintla and Acaponeta.

In Nayarit, the efforts have  concentrated their attention on increasing the productivity of basic cultivations of the region such as beans, sorghum, grain, and fruit.

Mainly, the benefit for producers that participate in this project is an improvement in their income  due to a better efficiency in the exploitation of water resources.

"This project is performed under the sponsorship of the Fundación Gonzalo Río Arronte, Private Assistance Institution".
